List of records shattered by New Zealand in 2nd test vs South Africa

New Zealand won their first ever test series against South Africa in 92 years.
The New Zealand cricket team ended their long wait for their maiden test series win over South Africa. Veteran batter Kane Williamson guided the hosts to a seven-wicket win in the second test over South Africa at the Seddon Park, Hamilton on Friday, February 16.
New Zealand’s Kane Williamson smashed an unbeaten 133 as the hosts successfully chased down 267 runs, which was set by South Africa. Williamson’s inspired knock helped his side to win the series by 2–0 against an inexperienced Proteas side.
Below there are few records which was unlocked after the conclusion of the second test match between New Zealand and South Africa.
1. Kane Williamson becomes the fastest player to reach 32 test hundreds:

After reaching his 32nd test hundred in his 172nd innings, former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson surpassed Australian veteran batter Steve Smith to claim the record for the fastest player to score 32 test hundreds.
Smith, who took 174 innings, was the record holder earlier. After Kane Williamson achieved this milestone, Smith dropped to No. 2. The elite also includes some great names like Ricky Ponting (166 innings,) Sachin Tendulkar (179 innings,) and Younis Khan (183 innings).
2. Most fourth-innings hundreds in test cricket:

Kane Williamson also equaled former Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan’s record for most centuries in the fourth innings of a test match.
After smashing a match-wining century against South Africa in the second test match, Williamson has now five tons to his name in the fourth innings of a test match, which equals Younis Khan’s (5).
The list also features Sunil Gavaskar (4), Ricky Ponting (4), Ramnaresh Sarwan (4) and Graeme Smith (4) centuries in the fourth innings of a test match.
3. New Zealand end their 92 years long wait to win a test series against South Africa:

New Zealand hammered the young, spirited South African side at home to create history. With a comfortable seven-wicket win at Seddon Park in Hamilton, New Zealand registered their first-ever test series win against South Africa after 18 attempts in 92 years.
Kane Williamson once again showed why he is ranked as one of the best test batters currently, as his record-breaking century helped New Zealand chase down a target of 267 runs and win the two-match series by 2-0 on Thursday, February 16.
Earlier, New Zealand hadn’t beaten the South African side in 17 previous test series dating back to 1931, having lost 13 and drawn four.
4. New Zealand’s William O’Rourke achieves huge NZ record:

Young New Zealand fast bowler and debutant William O’Rourke, who made it into the playing XI against South Africa in the second test match between the two sides at Hamilton, also etched his name into the record books.
Fast bowler William O’Rourke claimed a total of nine wickets against South Africa in the second test match at Hamilton, where his side won the historic test series by 2-0 after 92-years-long wait.
After claiming the match figures of 9/93 during the second test against South Africa, the pacer broke the record for best figures by a Kiwi bowler on debut in test cricket. Earlier, the record had been held by Mark Craig (8/188) since June 2014.
Kane Williamson praises South Africa for their spirited performance
Williamson, who scored an unbeaten 133* runs in the fourth innings of the second test to guide his team to a historic win, lauded South Africa for their spirited performance during the second test match.
“Coming into today on a wearing surface we knew we were going to have to string partnerships together. Credit to South Africa. Certainly, for the first couple of days they outplayed us I thought,” said Kane Williamson.
“We had to fight hard to get out of that position and change momentum and with the partnerships and seeing off the new ball were able to give ourselves the chance,” Williamson added after finishing the series with scores of 118, 109, 43, and 133* in four innings.
With a 2-0 win over South Africa, which earned them their first-ever Tangiwai Shield, New Zealand also solidified their position in the ICC World Test Championship (ICC WTC 2023-25) points table.
