Virat Kohli played 123 tests for India from 2011 to 2025.

Virat Kohli is one of the best batters to ever play for Indian Cricket Team in test cricket. The right-handed batsman made his test debut in June 2011 and went on to play 123 matches till his retirement in May 2025. Kohli also led the Indian team across 68 tests from December 2014 to January 2022.

Kohli is one of the 14 Indian cricketers to play 100 or more tests for the national side. He mustered 9230 runs across 210 innings at an average of 46.85. Kohli also slammed seven double tons in the longest format, including his highest individual score of unbeaten 254* against South Africa.

The right-handed batsman owns a fabulous record as a test skipper. Kohli took the leadership of the test side in December 2014 and led the team till January 2022. He is the most successful Indian captain in the longest format with a win percentage of 58.82.

Kohli registered many records in test cricket over his 14-year-long career. However, a few of his achievements will continue to be part of the record books for a long time and highlight his dominance in the longest format of the game. On that note, let’s take a glance at the top five test records which Virat Kohli will be known for.

Top five test records which Virat Kohli will be known for

1. Most successful Indian test captain (40 wins)

Virat Kohli took the leadership of the Indian Cricket Team in tests in December 2014; following the then skipper MS Dhoni’s retirement from the longest format. He went on to lead the side till January 2022. Kohli led Indian team in 68 test matches.

Out of these, he clinched victories in 40 games and lost 17, while 11 ended in a draw. With 40 wins, he is the most successful test captain for Indian Cricket Team. The next on the list are Dhoni (27 wins in 60 games) and Sourav Ganguly (21 wins in 49 games).

2. First Indian captain to win a test series on Australian soil

Undoubtedly, Kohli’s biggest highlight as India’s test skipper is winning a test series on Australian soil. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018-19, the Virat Kohli-led side crushed the hosts Australia (2-1) in the four-match series, scripting their first-ever test series win in Australia.

During the four-match series, India won the first and third test by 31 runs and 137 runs in Adelaide and Melbourne respectively. Australia won the second test by 146 runs in Perth. As the final test in Sydney ended in a draw, the Virat Kohli & Co. scripted the record books with India’s first-ever test series victory on Australian soil.

3. Most double hundreds by an Indian batter (7)

Virat Kohli hammered 31 tons in tests across 210 innings. Out of these, there were seven double centuries – the most by any Indian batter so far. The next on the list are former legend Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar with six double tons each.

Kohli scored his top knock of an unbeaten 254 against South Africa in October 2019. He scored the rest six double centuries against Bangladesh (204), England (235), New Zealand (211), West Indies (200), and Sri Lanka (213 & 243).

4. Most double hundreds by a captain (7)

Interestingly, Kohli slammed all his seven double tons in tests as India’s captain. With that, he also owns the record for the most double hundreds (7) by a captain in the longest format of the game. Brian Lara (5), Don Bradman (4), Michael Clarke (4), Graeme Smith (4) follow him next on the list of captains with most double hundreds in test cricket.

This is a rare achievement that will continue to be part of the record books for a long time. Kohli’s seven double tons arrived from July 2016 to October 2019. He led the Indian team from December 2014 to January 2022.

5. Highest rating points earned by an Indian in ICC batting rankings: 937 (2018)

Kohli was at his prime in the year 2018 in tests. The right-handed batsman slammed 1322 runs across 24 innings in the year at a stunning average of 55.08 and slammed five centuries and five half-centuries.

The right-handed batsman showed an impeccable form during India’ tour of England 2018, hitting 593 runs in five tests with two centuries and three fifties. After his wonderful show in the series, he reached 937 rating points as the top-ranked ICC test batsman, which is the highest rating points achieved by any Indian batter to date.

The next Indian player on the list is former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar; who reached 916 rating points in 1979. Overall, only 11 batters have reached 937 or more rating points in ICC’s test rankings for batsmen in international cricket. Don Bradman holds the top spot with 961 rating points.
