Rishabh Pant was unluckily run out just before lunch on day three of the Lord’s test.

India’s wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant endured pain in his left hand and penned a story of bravery, violence, and eventually heartache. His 74 off 112 balls was an example of his trademark flare mixed with grit, on day three of the ongoing third test between India England at the Lord’s.

Pant arrived with India in danger, but he found a reliable partner in KL Rahul, and the two mounted a tremendous comeback. Their 141-run partnership not only stabilized the innings but also changed the momentum in India’s favor.

Pant was noticeably unhappy from the minute he took guard, suffering a finger injury while keeping on Thursday. The anguish was obvious, with regular visits from the physio and brief grimaces captured on video.

Pant, however, did not retreat into a shell, as is his style. He got started with a classic flick off Jofra Archer, then lofted Shoaib Bashir down the ground for a dominating six. But just as it appeared that he would go till the break, calamity struck.

Pant pushed Bashir’s ball towards cover point in the final over before lunch and went on to score a fast single. Ben Stokes, attentive and athletic near the circle, seized the opportunity and delivered a direct hit to the non-striker’s end. Pant was caught off guard, as his tough 74 came to a tragic conclusion.

Pant set many records in an innings that exemplified his daring brand of cricket, spearheading India’s valiant comeback.

The most notable achievement came when Pant surpassed the legendary Vivian Richards for the most sixes struck against England in test cricket. With 36 sixes to his name, he surpassed Richards’ record of 34—an emphatic declaration of his superiority over the English attack.

Pant also matched Rohit Sharma’s tally of 88 sixes in test cricket, making him India’s joint-second most prolific six-hitter. What made the feat even more impressive was that Pant did it in 46 tests, compared to Rohit’s 67. He is now just two sixes behind Virender Sehwag’s Indian record of 90.

Pant added to his expanding list of honors by surpassing MS Dhoni’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian wicket-keeper in a test series in England. With 416 runs from three matches, he became the first visiting wicket-keeper to score 400 runs in a single test series on English soil, surpassing Dhoni’s 349 from the 2014 trip.

Rishabh Pant, with his eighth test fifty in England, also drew equal to MS Dhoni’s record of eight fifties for the record for most 50+ scores by a designated visiting wicket-keeper in England.
