India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has sent across his wishes to England all-rounder Chris Woakes after he announced his retirement from international cricket. The 36-year-old bid adieu to his international career after not getting picked in the England squad for The Ashes 2025-26.
Woakes made the decision to retire as he wasn’t part of the Ashes squad on Australian soil following a dislocated shoulder in the fifth test against India.
“Making my debut in 2011 in Australia seems like yesterday, but time flies when you are having fun. Lifting two World Cups and being part of some amazing Ashes series is something I never thought was possible, and those memories and celebrations with my teammates will stay with me forever,” Woakes wrote on his retirement post.
Woakes played 217 games for England across all formats since his debut in 2011, taking 396 wickets and scoring 3,705 runs. The all-rounder was a key player of England’s 2019 World Cup-winning side, contributing with both bat and ball. In addition, he won the T20 World Cup with England in 2022.
“Give that bowling arm a rest and my foot too”- Rishabh Pant says to Chris Woakes
Rishabh Pant took to X (formerly Twitter) to send across his wishes to Chris Woakes on his retirement. When Pant tried to reverse sweep a full delivery off Woakes, he got hit on his foot and fractured it. Pant made a comeback to the field despite the injury, contributing significant runs in the second innings of the game in Manchester.
Woakes, meanwhile, sustained an injury while defending a boundary. Similar to Pant, he came out to bat when his team most needed him, with his arm in a sling, but couldn’t stop the inevitable in the Oval Test, which India won on the last day.
“Happy Retirement Woakesy. You have been amazing on the field. Lots of discipline, a big smile and always good vibes. Now you can finally give that bowling arm a rest and my foot too. You definitely left a mark on me before retirement. Wishing you a fantastic journey ahead in whatever you choose,” Pant wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match test series against the West Indies at home as he failed to fully recover from his foot fracture. He is also in doubt for the white-ball tour of Australia and will most likely return for the South Africa series at home in late November-December.
