Will Rishabh Pant play in IPL 2024? DC head coach Ricky Ponting gives massive update

Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has been out of the action since last 13 months.

A major accident in December 2022 pressed the pause button on Rishabh Pant‘s cricket career. Rishabh Pant has been away from action for last 13 months. He is expected to return to the ground during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) in March. Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has spent large amount of time at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Rishabh Pant, who is regular captain of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, is expected to return on the cricket field during the upcoming IPL 2024 and the same has been confirmed now by Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting in a press conference. Ponting also informed that Pant is very confident about his comeback on the field. Although it is not clear yet if Pant will be available for entire season or not. Rishabh Pant suffered severe injuries in a car crash he suffered near Roorkee in December 2022.

Pant confident about IPL 2024 comeback: Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting recently got appointed as USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom’s head coach. During an event where Ponting was unveiled as Washington Freedom’s head coach, he informed about Delhi Capitals’ captain Rishabh Pant. Ponting said, “Rishabh is very confident that he’s going to be right to play, In what capacity we’re not quite sure yet. You would have seen all the social media stuff, he’s up and about and running well. But in saying that we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well. So we’re not sure if we’ll get wicketkeeping out of him this year.”

Ricky Ponting also revealed when he will be asked if he is ready, Pant will always say he will be taking part in the entire IPL 2024. Ponting added, “But I’ll guarantee if I asked him now he’ll say, ‘I’m playing every game, I’m keeping every game and I’m batting at No.4.’ That’s just what he’s like, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed. He’s such a dynamic player. He’s obviously our captain. We missed him incredibly last year.” 

Delhi Capitals had a terrible campaign in the IPL 2023 and finished at ninth place in the points table. David Warner was captain of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2023. Warner is likely to lead Delhi Capitals again if Rishabh Pant is unlikely to take part in entire IPL 2024. There were also reports of Delhi Capitals willing to bring a change in their support staff as well before the season.
