Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant suffered a significant foot injury on day one of the fourth test against England, which began on July 23, 2025. With England leading the five-match series 2-1, they chose to bowl first after winning the toss in overcast conditions at Manchester’s Old Trafford.
England made one change, bringing in Liam Dawson to replace the injured Shoaib Bashir. India, meanwhile, made three changes: Sai Sudharsan replaced Karun Nair, Shardul Thakur replaced injured Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Anshul Kamboj made his debut, replacing injured Akash Deep.
India got off to a solid start, with openers KL Rahul (47) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) putting on a 94-run partnership. Following Rahul’s dismissal, Jaiswal and debutant Sai Sudharsan contributed 26 runs until Dawson dismissed Jaiswal. Shubman Gill followed shortly after, falling to Ben Stokes for 12.
Rishabh Pant taken off the field on medical cart with a bleeding foot
Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant held India’s innings together with an unbeaten 72-run stand for the fourth wicket, providing the visitors with much-needed momentum. Pant appeared in good form, scoring 37 off quick deliveries, including two boundaries and a six, before calamity struck.
Pant was smacked on the boot during the day’s last session while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. While England strongly argued for LBW, the umpire denied it—but India suffered a setback. Pant was clearly in severe pain, necessitating immediate attention from the Indian physio and medical teams.
Pant’s right toe showed substantial edema upon examination. Pant, wincing in pain with each touch, was unable to continue and was forced to retire hurt. He was eventually transported off the field via medical buggies for additional treatment.
Pant appeared to be in a lot of discomfort, and the camera captured his damaged foot with blood gushing. He was replaced at the crease by Ravindra Jadeja.
