West Indies defeated Australia by 8 runs in Gabba, their first Test win down under after 27 years.
West Indies created history by defeating Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane by 8 runs. This helped them level the two-match Test series 1-1. But more than that, it was a huge win for the visitors who were on a 20-Test losing streak against the hosts.
Australia batters struggled against Shamar Joseph after being set 216 to win the Test and series.
Shamar Joseph had to retire hurt after being hit on the toe by a Mitchell Starc yorker, but he went on to smash the Australian batting lineup in the fourth innings. Steve Smith remained undefeated on 91, while Cameron Green (42) and Mitchell Starc (21) were the only batsmen to surpass 20 after Smith.
Travis Head recorded a king pair, as he was out for a duck on the first ball in both innings. Though Alzarri Joseph caused early damage by removing Usman Khawaja and Justin Greaves dismissing Marnus Labuschagne, the rest was Shamar Joseph’s show.
He bowled with pace and extra bounce to torment the Australian batters, and the hosts had to respond to his performance. Josh Hazlewood was the final victim, bowled by Shamar Joseph, as the West Indies team celebrated a miraculous victory. He picked 7/68 and was named the Player of the Match and the Player of the Series.
This was the West Indies’ first Test win in Australia since 1997, and they also ended a 20-match losing streak against Australia in tests. They also gave Australia its first Test defeat in day-night matches.
“Rishabh Pant” trends on twitter after West Indies’ historic win over Australia at the Gabba
Interestingly, Brisbane, where Australia had not lost a Test since 1988-89, have now lost two consecutive games, first to India in 2021 and now to the West Indies. As soon as West Indies defeated Australia in Brisbane, the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, was abuzz with comparisons to India’s amazing Test win in 2021 at the same venue.
Notably, India were asked to chase 329 runs and got a good start with Shubman Gill scoring 91 and Cheteshwar Pujara making a fifty as well. But in the end, it was Rishabh Pant, who with Washington Sundar took India home, scoring 89* as India became the first team since 1988-89 to defeat Australia at the Gabba. India also won their second consecutive Test series in Australia, winning by 2-1.
This led to Twitterverse filled with Rishabh Pant mentions after West Indies’ win.
