India's tour of West Indies 2023
Robin Uthappa suggests Indian cricketers to play leagues outside IPL for success in ICC events
Former cricketer Robin Uthappa shed light on why India have not been doing well in the ICC events.
In the recent turn of events, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has highlighted a relevant concern that could be impacting India’s performance ahead of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. Following India’s defeat in the second T20I against the West Indies in Guyana, Uthappa expressed his belief that the absence of Indian players in franchise leagues outside the Indian Premier League (IPL) might be a factor contributing to India’s struggles in ICC tournaments. While the match saw the West Indies emerge victorious under Nicholas Pooran’s stellar performance, Uthappa’s remarks offer a fresh perspective on India’s approach to global cricket.
The former cricketer’s concern suggests that while the IPL’s exclusivity maintains its brand value, it could be hampering India’s preparedness for international contests. “Well, yeah, I certainly think the exposure at the IPL…misses out, especially in the ICC tournaments, because we don’t play any other leagues in any other part of the world,” he noted.
Uthappa further emphasized that overseas exposure is crucial for players to adapt to diverse conditions and improve their performance on the global stage.
“And I think yes, it does well to protect the IPL as an entity, but I think it costs us at the ICC level. And I think those are the advantages that the accomplished players have against our Indian bowlers when they play them in bilaterals or they play against them in ICC tournaments. They have had so much exposure against them in the nets and playing against them in the IPL for years 3, 4, and 6. So you already know what the bowler does, and you already know what the batter does. So you have a lot of information,” Robin Uthappa asserted.
As India continue their journey in international cricket, Robin Uthappa’s insightful commentary urges a re-evaluation of the country’s cricketing strategies. While the IPL remains a powerhouse of talent and entertainment, Uthappa’s concerns emphasize the need for Indian players to gain exposure in franchise leagues beyond their borders.
West Indies win over India in the 2nd T20I
India’s second T20I match against the West Indies left the team trailing 0-2 in the five-match series as the hosts secured a win guided by Nicholas Pooran’s impressive knock of 67 off 40 deliveries. Pooran’s mastery over Indian bowlers, attributed to his IPL experience, raised questions about whether Indian players are at a disadvantage due to their lack of participation in overseas tournaments.
