Robin Uthappa said he was surprised that Gautam Gambhir did not give credit to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the press conference.

Former Indian Cricket Team wicket-keeper batter Robin Uthappa said he was surprised by Gautam Gambhir not giving credit to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ODI series victory against South Africa. The cricketer-turned-commentator noted that the Indian head coach did not mention Rohit and Kohli’s efforts in the post-match press conference after the third ODI, which according to him was quite strange.

Kohli and Sharma were at their level best in the ODI series against the Proteas, leading the hosts to a 2-1 victory in the three-match series. Kohli rocked with his back-to-back centuries in the first two games and concluded the final game with an unbeaten fifty to win the Player of the Series award.

On the other hand, Sharma commenced the campaign with a half-century in the opening game and another fifty in the final clash, while getting out for 14 runs in the second encounter. With Yashasvi Jaiswal, he set up a match-winning partnership to drive the Men in Blue to a big in the series-deciding third game in Visakhapatnam. In the prior ODI series against Australia in October, he won Player of the Series in a losing cause.

I didn’t see Gautam Gambhir giving credit to either Rohit or Virat: Robin Uthappa

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uthappa said he was surprised by Gautam Gambhir not giving credit to Rohit and Virat following the ODI series win against the Proteas. He also hailed the veteran Indian batters for their performance in the campaign.

“What I found surprising is the post-match of that series, in the press conference, I didn’t see Gautam giving credit to either Rohit or Virat. Here are a couple of guys who’ve batted out of their skins and shown us how good they are and how good they can be,” Uthappa said.

“They reduced all kinds of doubts and shut down any naysayers about what they actually can do and will do for India when they are in the right kind of form. That felt strange,” he added.

Notably, Sharma and Kohli currently capture the top two spots in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) rankings for ODI batsmen. They also broke multiple records with their spectacular stints against Temba Bavuma & Co in the ODI series. Moreover, they helped the team to make a comeback in the ODI series following a humiliating whitewash in the test series.
