Rohit Sharma last played an ODI in March 2025.

India captain Rohit Sharma has become the second-ranked ODI batter in the world. This happened when ICC unveiled its updated ODI rankings on August 13, 2025. This is despite Rohit Sharma not having played any competitive cricket since the IPL 2025.

Rohit Sharma last played for India in ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India won the tournament after defeating New Zealand in the final in Dubai and grabbing their second ICC trophy in six months under Rohit Sharma. This was their second ICC Champions Trophy triumph after 2013, and in June 2024, India won the T20 World Cup.

Babar Azam fell to No. 3 following a run of poor scores in Pakistan’s just-finished ODI series against the West Indies in the Caribbean, coinciding with Rohit’s ascent.

Shubman Gill, who has maintained his top spot in the rankings, is currently just behind Rohit. Babar is in third position with 751 points, while Rohit has 756 rating points, which is 28 less than Gill’s total.

Virat Kohli remains at the fourth spot; five Indians are in the top 15 rankings

With 736 points, former captain Virat Kohli is currently in fourth place and will be looking to climb when he returns in October for a three-match ODI series against Australia.

The last time both Rohit and Kohli played for India was in March in the ICC Champions Trophy. Having retired from T20Is last year, both veteran batters shocked their fans by announcing their Test retirements within a week in May this year, in the middle of IPL 2025.

The ranking increase coincides with the BCCI’s declaration that it is not in a rush to make decisions regarding Rohit and Kohli’s futures, following a news story that suggested the two players would retire following the October tour of Australia.

With the Bangladesh series being postponed from August this year to next year, the next assignment for Rohit and Kohli will be the tour of Australia in October, where India will play three ODIs and five T20Is.

Who is the No. 1 ranked ICC ODI batter?

Shubman Gill is the No. 1 ranked ICC ODI batter as of 13th August, 2025.
