Rohit Sharma suggests 'Best of three' finals after losing ICC WTC 2023 final
Rohit Sharma also put the onus on Indian batting line-up after the loss at the hands of Australia.
India failed to touch the World Test Championship Title twice in the last two years. First, it was against New Zealand in 2021, and now against Australia at The Oval. The World Test Championship began in 2019 with a two-year cycle tournament. The tournament has seen changes in both of its editions and there is still room for improvement in the tournament.
After the two back-to-back defeats Indian captain Rohit Sharma has suggested a change in the tournament final structure and batted for best of three test series to decide the winner of the World Test Championship. The same debate also came up after India’s defeat against New Zealand in the 2021 edition.
Rohit gives a best of three finals suggestion
India captain Rohit Sharma in a press conference suggested, “I would like to play the 3-match test series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought but we played just one game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle”. He further added, “I would love that, But is there a time? That’s the big question. It’s about finding that window where it can fit in”. On the other hand, Australian captain Pat Cummins looked happy with the current format and have cited other sports where one opportunity is given to win the title as well as medals in the Olympics.
A three-match final will be extremely difficult to schedule with so much cricket around the World of Cricket. Players are also prioritizing various leagues over international cricket. The Defunct Commonwealth Bank series in Australia used to host best of three finals in a 50-over tri-series tournament every year. Rohit Sharma blamed the batting line-up for the loss in the World Test Championship Final. Rohit said, “We failed with the bat. We didn’t apply ourselves well. The pitch was good to bat on all five days”. India failed to cross 300 runs mark in both innings of the WTC Final.
