"Kabhi na kabhi to milega..": Rohit Sharma desperate to win ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 for India
Rohit Sharma didn’t get a spot in India squad when India won the World Cup last time in 2011.
Team India had two disappointing seasons at the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015 in Australia and then in England in 2019. In both these tournaments, India were knocked out from semifinals after having a great league round campaign. India will be hosting the World Cup for the fourth time in their history and for the time as the only host.
The last time India hosted the World Cup in 2011, they came out with cricket’s most coveted trophy under MS Dhoni’s leadership. From the current Indian team setup, only Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin were part of that squad. Now captain of India Rohit Sharma didn’t find himself in India squad back in 2011 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma already shared his disappointment of missing out on the 2011 World Cup squad multiple times and how he coped with it. Now under his leadership, Fans will have the same expectations as they had in 2011. Rohit Sharma in an event said, “Honestly, I have never won a (50-over) World Cup, it’s a dream to win a World Cup and to be here fighting for it nothing makes me happier than that. You don’t get World Cups on a platter, you have to really work hard and that is what we have been doing all these years from 2011 till now we all are fighting for it.”
‘Team desperate to win the World Cup’
Indian captain Rohit Sharma also said that the team desperately wants to win the World Cup and break the jinx of the last few years. He said, “Everyone is desperate to go and win because we know we have a good team. We are all good players, and that inner confidence and self-belief are there that they can do it. It’s not happened doesn’t mean that we take it lightly. When we lost the T20 World Cup in 2022, I said we will keep fighting for the next World Cup. Then the World Test Championship was coming and I said we will keep fighting for it, no matter what. Kabhi na kabhi to milega (We will win at some point).”
Team India are empty-handed in the ICC events for the last 10 years. They last won an ICC title in 2013 when a team under MS Dhoni won the Champions Trophy in England. After that, India struggled to win an ICC event. They played four finals in the ICC events after that but lost comprehensively in all of those games. In the 2014 T20 World Cup final Sri Lanka defeated India, in the 2017 Champions Trophy final Pakistan thrashed India. Then they lost back-to-back World Test Championship Finals in England, against New Zealand in 2021, and then against Australia in 2023.
