Rohit Sharma hammered his 12th test century against England in the first innings of the Dharamshala test.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma smashed his 12th test century during the fifth test against England at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Friday. This knock not only propelled India to a commanding position in the final test of the series but also saw him equal a prestigious record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Sharma, who began day two on a promising 52*, wasted no time in accelerating. The Indian skipper displayed some aggressive stroke play against the likes of England bowlers James Anderson and Shoaib Bashir by hammering many boundaries. Sharma’s well-constructed 103 came off just 162 deliveries, where he showcased his clean hitting and exceptional timing.
Rohit Sharma equals Sachin Tendulkar unique record
After smashing the 12th test century against England in the first innings of the Dharamshala test, veteran opener Rohit Sharma joins elite company in Indian cricketer. He now joins the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the most hundreds by an Indian player after turning 30-years-old. It’s a remarkable feat that highlights Sharma’s dominance against bowling all over the world.
Sachin Tendulkar, fondly referred to as the “God of Cricket,” previously held the record for most centuries scored by an Indian batter after turning 30. During his legendary career, Tendulkar smashed 35 tons after turning 30-years-old which was the most by any Indian player.
After his 12th test century against England in the Dharamshala test, the modern-day great Rohit Sharma equals Sachin Tendulkar’s unique record of having 35 centuries after turning 30. The veteran opener, known for his elegant stroke-making and explosive batting style, has been a prolific scorer in recent years for his national side.
India continues to dominate the Dharamshala test
Resuming on the overnight score of 135/1, Rohit (103 off 162) and Gill (110 off 150) in pristine weather and batting conditions dominated the opening session of the day two and put up 160-run plus stand, India’s second consecutive hundred partnership in the series.
Gill played the aggressor early on, while Rohit looked solid at one end. England tried the short ball ploy but it didn’t work as the two players didn’t let the pressure build.
Both the Indian batters took India to 264/1 during the lunch break. However, just after the start of the second session on day two, England skipper Ben Stokes produced a brilliant outswinger, dismissing Rohit Sharma on 103 runs.
Veteran pacer James Anderson also joins the party as he breaches Shubman Gill’s defense as the visitors get two quick wickets at the start of the second session. At the time of writing, Sarfaraz Khan and debutant Devdutt Padikkal were in the crease. India were 314/3, leading England by 96 runs.
With both the Indian batters leading the charge and a strong batting line-up to follow, India is well-positioned to take control of the final test and potentially clinch the series by 4-1 against England.
