Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from test cricket last month.

Indian Cricket Team ODI skipper Rohit Sharma shared his father’s reaction after he announced his retirement from test cricket. He also highlighted how his father always kept the longest format of the game over white-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma left the entire cricket fraternity shocked when he announced his retirement from test cricket in May 2025. The batter made the decision public through a social media post, and his announcement came just a few days before the Indian team’s squad was revealed for the England series.

Rohit Sharma, who hit a century on his debut in tests, had a roller coaster ride in his career in the format. After shining initially, he witnessed a massive downfall and was dropped from the team as well. However, in 2019, a new version of Rohit was born in tests.

Rohit Sharma was promoted as the opener, and he aced the challenge immediately, slamming a double ton in the first series itself. He then went on to play a massive role at the top and is still the leading run-getter for the Indian Cricket Team in the history of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).

However, he again witnessed a dip in his form and it came during the home season last year. He failed in the series against Bangladesh and New Zealand and then had a horrible tour of Australia, where he managed just 31 runs and, following that, never featured in the format.

Rohit Sharma talked about his father’s love for test cricket, saying that even when he slammed 264 in an ODI, his father didn’t show any excitement. He revealed that his father used to talk to him in detail when he scored the 30s or 40s in the longest format of the game. In a chat during the launch of Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife Puja Pujara’s book ‘The Diary of a Cricketer’s Wife’ in Mumbai, he said:

“My father worked in a transport company. Like I said, what my mom did, my father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that we could have our life. But my father always, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn’t like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him.

“It’s important to go out there and all that. But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s, in Test cricket used to talk to me about it in detail. So that’s the kind of love he had for the game. And he’s obviously seen you go up the ranks.”

He was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement – Rohit Sharma on his father

Rohit Sharma also revealed that his father was disappointed when he announced his retirement from tests. He stressed that his father played a huge role in his career. He added:

“My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with the red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that’s my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible.”

Rohit Sharma ended his test career with 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. He is India’s 16th-highest run-scorer.
