Rohit Sharma won Player of the Match award for his unbeaten century in the Sydney ODI.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma dropped a massive hint about his ODI future following his magnificent knock in the third ODI between Australian Cricket Team and Indian Cricket Team at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney on Saturday, October 25. The opening batter smacked a match-winning century in the encounter and was adjudged Player of the Match.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Mitchell Marsh-led Australia failed to score big, getting all out for 236 runs. Matt Renshaw (56) scored a half-century, however, a four-wicket haul by Harshit Rana and two wickets by Washington Sundar didn’t allow to hosts to dominate with the bat.

In the chase, Rohit stole the limelight, hitting his 33rd ODI century. He slammed unbeaten 121 runs off 125 balls with 13 boundaries and three sixes. He built a stand of 69 runs with Shubman Gill (24) for the opening wicket and an 168-run unbeaten partnership with Virat Kohli (74*) to take the team home by nine wickets.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Rohit gave a hint about his ODI future, saying that he loves his job and would continue to perform for the team. Notably, with Rohit losing his ODI captaincy ahead of the Australia tour, there were rumours regarding his retirement from 50-over cricket after the series.

“I love playing in Australia and in general, Sydney. It’s a great ground, great crowd, great pitch as well. So, when you come to places like this, you want to challenge yourself as a batter, as a player. And that is what I expected. I never thought for one second that it is going to be easy. I love doing what I do. And I hope I continue to do that,” Rohit said after receiving Player of the Match award.

The 38-year-old also revealed that he underwent good preparation ahead of the series and was confident about his performance. Being an experienced player in the side, he looks forward to guiding young players in future on such tours.

“I haven’t played for a long time, I had good prep before coming in here. I was slightly confident in my head about how I would go in this tournament. Although, you know, we couldn’t win the series, but we’ll take a lot of positives. It’s still a very young team that we have. A lot of guys who haven’t been to Australia,” he said.

“When I came for the first time to this squad, I remember how the seniors around me were there to help us. And it’s our job now to make sure that we pass on the right message. Never easy travelling abroad and playing cricket. So, whatever little experience we got, it’s important to pass on that and make sure they handle it pretty well. The guys are pretty talented. It’s just about understanding how they want to play,” Rohit added.

Meanwhile, Rohit finished as the highest run-scorer of the three-match series with 202 runs and was also adjudged as Player of the Series. Australia claimed the series 2-1 after winning the first two games. Now, both sides will lock horns in a five-match T20I series, scheduled to be played from October 29 to November 8.
