'Rohit was in line to become Captain'

Ex-teammate of Rohit Sharma, T Suman said he was able to spot the leadership qualities in Rohit. Speaking to India Today, T Suman said, “After 2010, what I know about Rohit Sharma was, he wanted captaincy of Deccan Chargers. After 2010 when the auction was there, the franchise also promised him, but then I don’t know what happened. The franchise went to leave all the players, and then we know what happened to the Deccan Chargers. Rohit, I, and Symonds all of us came to Mumbai Indians”. Rohit was a key player in the Deccan Chargers title win in IPL 2009.

Former Andhra batter also said that Rohit was very smart when batting. He added, “He was a very smart player, and even when batting, he used to think like a captain. He used to give advice and suggestions to Gilchrist at that time”. He also said that he knew from the start that Rohit Sharma is captaincy material. Rohit Sharma scored 362 runs in 16 games in the 2009 season and for Deccan Chargers scored 1170 runs in 3 seasons. Rohit has had a successful tenure as skipper of Mumbai Indians. Since he became MI’s captain they have secured the title for a record 5 times.

Rohit was awarded the Indian Cricket team captaincy as well. After World T20 2021 in UAE, Virat had to leave the T20 captaincy and was sacked from ODI and left the Test captaincy in just 2-3 months in 2021. After Virat, the BCCI picked Rohit Sharma as the full-time captain of the Indian team. Under Rohit, India qualified for the semifinals in World T20 2022 and now in June Rohit-led Indian team will face Australia in the WTC Final.
