Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan walked out to pavilion on duck against Australia.

Indian top-order had a poor day with the bat against Australia at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Team India lost the opening three wickets inside two overs, and the openers went back to the pavilion without even adding a run to the board. Ishan Kishan (0) and Rohit Sharma (0) both scored ducks, along with middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer (0). This score-line gave a scare to Indian fans in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against Australia.

Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan achieved an unwanted World Cup record with their poor show with the bat. This was the second occasion when Indian openers got out without scoring in the same innings. Ishan Kishan was caught in slips by Cameron Green when he was trying to play a drive-through cover region. Rohit Sharma was trapped in front by Josh Hazlewood in the second over.

Rohit Sharma-Ishan Kishan repeated 1983 World Cup

Before India vs Australia at Chepauk, the iconic 1983 World Cup game against Zimbabwe was the only occasion when both Indian openers perished without scoring a run in their innings. Sunil Gavaskar and Krish Shrikanth opened the innings at Tunbridge Wells and walked back to the pavilion without scoring a run. Sunil Gavaskar was trapped in front by Peter Rawson, while Kris Shrikanth was caught by Iain Butchart in Kevin Curran’s delivery.

Indian captain Kapil Dev went on to score 175 runs in 138 balls, smashing 16 fours and 6 sixes. India lost their top-order batting on just 17 runs, and Kapil walked in when India were reeling under pressure on 17 for 5. Kapil’s innings gave India 266 runs total on the board. Zimbabwe fell short by 31 runs in the game, and India finished one of their most iconic World Cup victories in history.

India were 3 wickets down in just 2 runs, and from there, Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) stitched an unbeaten partnership of 165 runs for the 4th wicket. India restricted Australia to 199 runs with the help of magnificent spin performances from Ravindra Jadeja (3/28) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/42). India will be playing their next game against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi on October 11.
