Rohit Sharma will return to Ranji Trophy after almost 10 years.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are among several Indian test cricketers, including Virat Kohli, who will return to play in the Ranji Trophy after India’s disappointing performance in the last few months.

The decision of these stars comes amid BCCI’s made it mandatory for members of the test team to  play domestic cricket whenever they are available.

Rohit and Jaiswal’s will play in Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir, scheduled to start on Thursday, January 23.

Prithvi Shaw and Ayush Mhatre opened for Mumbai at the start of the 2024/25 season in October. However, after Shaw’s poor performance, he was dropped and replaced by Angkrish Raghuvanshi. With the return of the Rohit and Jaiswal, Mumbai had to make the call between keeping the incumbents as openers or allowing the test players to open in only one match

Ajinkya Rahane confirms Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open for Mumbai

Mumbai’s captain, Ajinkya Rahane, has confirmed that Rohit and Yashasvi will open the innings. He also emphasized the importance of playing competitive cricket.

Speaking to the media ahead of Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy game against Jammu and Kashmir, Rahane responded to a reporter who asked if Yashasvi and Rohit would open the innings for Mumbai, saying, “Is this even a question?

Notably, Rohit and Yashasvi opened together only once in the BGT 2024-25 in Melbourne, where they put up partnerships of 8 and 25 runs before Rohit was dismissed both times.

Rahane further stressed the importance of playing competitive cricket, mentioning that while the duo may not have any red-ball games upcoming, they will be playing ODI cricket in the months ahead.

He added, “For any cricketer, getting match preparation (and) game-time is really important. Obviously, there is no red-ball (test) cricket at this moment. But they are going to play white-ball (competitions).

Jaiswal was India’s highest run-scorer in the BGT 2024-25 with 391 runs in 10 innings. However, Rohit struggled, scoring only 31 runs across five innings.
