Rohit Sharma has faced severe criticism for his recent struggles in test cricket. The Indian captain scored 619 runs in the tests in 2024 at an average of 24.76.
Rohit’s struggles in test cricket worsened in the latter part of the year. The 37-year-old found it tough against New Zealand’s varied bowling attack during the home series, where he hit only one fifty in six knocks. He then had an even worse Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, managing only 31 runs in five innings.
Rohit’s poor form has sparked discussions about his future in test cricket.
Rohit joined Mumbai’s squad for their training session on Tuesday, January 14, ahead of the second phase of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.
The defending champions Mumbai are set to face Jammu and Kashmir on January 23 to resume their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign. The team is expected to train throughout the week leading up to the important match.
Will Rohit Sharma play Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy match?
Rohit Sharma’s participation in Mumbai’s Ranji game against J&K is uncertain yet. However, his eagerness to train with the team suggests there is a possibility that the Indian captain may return to domestic cricket for at least one of Mumbai’s two remaining fixtures before India host England in the ODI series.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is expected to announce the squad later this week.
Earlier, Rohit decided to drop himself for the Sydney test of the BGT 2024-25. However, he clarified that he had only dropped himself for one test and not retired.
Rohit said, “I have not retired. I stood down, that is what I would say. Basically the chat that I had with the coach and the selector was very simple. I am not able to score runs, there is no form, it is an important match and we need a player with form.“
