Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from test cricket, confirmed that he will continue playing the ODIs

Indian Cricket Team senior batter Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in ODI cricket is in massive danger. As per a report in Dainik Jagran, it is learned that Shubman Gill is all set to take over the reins from him in the 50-over format as well.

Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from test cricket, confirmed that he will continue playing ODIs. During a recent interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, the senior batter also expressed his desire to play the ICC World Cup 2027 and win the tournament as captain.

But, his ambitions to lead the Indian Cricket Team in the ICC World Cup 2027 might not be fulfilled. As per the report, Shubman Gill, who was recently appointed India’s Test captain, could take over the charge in ODIs as well, and that a decision might be made soon.

Reports elsewhere suggest that Gill, who also made his captaincy debut in IPL this season, could be approached to be captain in all three formats, keeping in mind the future. The selection committee is looking to build the team for the next decade, and hence, they want Gill to build his own team gradually.

Shubman is Rohit Sharma’s deputy in ODI format

Shubman Gill currently serves as a vice-captain of the Indian Cricket Team in ODIs. However, the ICC World Cup 2027 is still two years away and so it will be a great time for the young batter to take charge and build for the mega event in South Africa.

This development comes after the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team, Gautam Gambhir, during an interview, mentioned that he isn’t in favour of split captaincy. He also stated that, ideally, he would want to work with one individual but also added that in today’s world, one player can’t captain in all three formats.

Removing Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy would be a big call to take, especially with the kind of success he has had as a skipper in the format. The senior opener recently guided the Indian Cricket Team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 win. Notably, the Men in Blue won the tournament undefeated.

Also, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Indian Cricket Team won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as well. In that tournament, too, the Men in Blue went undefeated and following that, the senior opener announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game.

Currently, the Indian Cricket Team has three different captains in three formats. Apart from Shubman Gill (Test) and Rohit Sharma (ODI), Suryakumar Yadav is leading the team in T20Is. It remains to be seen if the youngster takes charge in white-ball formats or not.
