Rohit Sharma revealed his honest opinion on Indian commentary.

Indian ODI skipper Rohit Sharma has pulled the curtains down on his test career after 11 long years. He submitted his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday, May 7 and also informed his fans through a social media post. Sharma will continue to lead Indian Cricket Team in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma made his test debut in November 2013 against the West Indies and represented the country in whites till December 2024, with his last match against Australia. He played a total of 67 tests for India. He also took over as test captain in February 2022. During a YouTube show, the Indian opener slammed the poor quality of cricket journalism in India and shared his honest opinion on Indian commentary.

It’s so disappointing: Rohit Sharma on Indian commentary

During a chat with sports journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube show, Sharma shared his honest views about cricket journalism and cricket commentary in India. The right-handed batsman feels the quality of journalism has dropped in India, as they are only focused on creating controversies.

“You guys are focused on creating controversy, on blowing up news. The quality of journalism has gone down. Earlier, conversations would revolve around cricket. Now, it’s all about getting views, likes, and making more people read your articles. Very little is written or spoken about the game itself. Tactics, analysis – it’s all missing,” the 38-year-old said during the show.

Sharma also criticized the style of Indian commentary and termed it disappointing. He also noted that the commentary in overseas nations like Australia is far better than India. According to Sharma, Indian commentators add too much ‘masala’ to their talks.

“When there’s a match on, we watch it on TV. But listen to how commentators speak these days. When we go to Australia, we hear their commentary and the difference in quality is vast. Here, it’s so disappointing – and I’m being very honest. It seems like they just want to single out a player and keep talking about him or her. It’s very disappointing”, Sharma said.

“There are so many people who want to know about the game. Why do they need masala? They are true cricket lovers. I know there’s this belief nowadays that fans want masala, but there are also those who want to understand the game. Yes, you have a platform to speak, but that doesn’t mean you can say anything. Respect the players,” he further added.

Meanwhile, Sharma will only represent Indian Cricket Team in ODIs now. He had pulled down the curtains on his T20I career last year in June following India’s victory in ICC T20 World Cup. Under his captaincy, Indian team reached the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final and ended as runners-up.

However, he failed to lead the side to ICC WTC 2023-25 final. India lost two crucial test series against and New Zealand at home and against Australia Down Under. The series defeats ended their chances of reaching the WTC final for the third straight time. Sharma is currently busy with his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 commitments with Mumbai Indians (MI).
