3 players who can replace Rohit Sharma as India's test captain following his retirement

Rohit Sharma became India’s Test captain in 2022. He announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7.

Rohit Sharma has shocked the entire Indian cricket fraternity and announced his retirement from the longest format. The 38-year-old took to his Instagram handle and shared a retirement post. He confirmed that he will continue to play ODI cricket for India.

With this decision, Rohit’s 11-year Test career came to an end. Rohit played 67 Tests for India and scored 4301 runs with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Currently, he is India’s highest scorer in the World Test Championship.

Rohit’s retirement means India have to decide who will be the next Test captain. However, some players are being seen as the next Test captain of India. On that note, let’s take a look at the three potential players who can be India’s next Test captain after Rohit Sharma.

1. Jasprit Bumrah

The ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has served as the stand-in captain for India on odd occasions when Rohit has been unavailable. He led India in two of the five tests in Australia.

Under him, India also dramatically won the Perth Test. Though with Bumrah, the issue can be his fitness. But with him playing as vice-captain of the team, there are chances that India can stick with him.

2. Shubman Gill

There is a possibility that India might make Shubman Gill the next test captain. Gill is being seen as the next captain of the Indian team and has also got the opportunity to captain India’s B team in a few series. Gill is a confident batsman and has played all formats for India.

The right-hander has had an incredible start to his international career, and his success as captain in the IPL 2025 can help him get the Indian Test captaincy.

3. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant is India’s first-choice player in the longer format. He is among the players who are seen in the leadership group. Pant has already achieved a lot in his test career, and his impact with the bat has been the reason for India’s success.

Being a keeper, he can also monitor the team. Most importantly, his success in the SENA countries can further strengthen his claim as India’s next Test captain. With his stature in Test cricket, it won’t be a surprise if he becomes India’s next Test captain.
