Rohit Sharma announces retirement from test cricket with immediate effect, reveals his ODI future

Rohit Sharma played 67 Test matches, scoring 4301 runs including 12 centuries.
In a shocking move, Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Tests on Wednesday, May 7, with immediate effect. Earlier, there were reports that the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is looking to sack Sharma as the test skipper due to his poor form and Team India’s poor show in the recent test series.
Notably, the Indian Cricket Team lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2025 earlier this year. They started the five-match series with a victory in the opening clash. However, they eventually lost the series 3-1 and failed to defend the title. The Rohit Sharma & Co. also faced a home series defeat against New Zealand in November last year. India faced a humiliating whitewash in the series (3-0).
The Indian cricket team also failed to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final, due to Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia. South Africa and Australia will clash in the WTC final later in June. India were runners-up in the last two WTC editions in 2023 and 2021.
I am retiring from Test cricket: Rohit Sharma on Instagram
Rohit Sharma informed about his shocking retirement from Tests in an Instagram story. However, he clarified that he will continue playing in the ODI format. Notably, Sharma retired from the T20Is last year after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share, I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in ODI format,” he wrote on Instagram.

Interestingly, Sharma has not played any tests in 2025. He dropped himself from the playing XI during the India vs Australia 5th Test in Sydney earlier in January. Last year, the right-handed batter scored 619 runs in 26 innings at an average of 24.76 in tests. He also scored two centuries and two half-centuries in the longest format last year.
He is currently busy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with the Mumbai Indians (MI). The MI opener struggled with his form at the start of the tournament but made a fabulous comeback in recent games.
