Rohit Sharma last played for India in the ODI series against New Zealand last month.
Having announced his retirement from test cricket last year in May, Rohit Sharma is only active in the ODI format. The former Indian captain looks forward to playing in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November next year.
Last year, Sharma showed a wonderful form in the ODI series against Australia, winning the Player of the Series award. Although India lost the series, Rohit made a mark with his fabulous performance by finishing as the leading run-scorer in the campaign.
He also hammered an unbeaten century in the third ODI, helping India to avoid a whitewash. That also helped him to move to the top spot in ICC rankings for ODI batters following the campaign. Later, he rocked with his performance in the South Africa ODI series, scoring half-centuries in two games out of three.
However, Rohit failed to replicate his magic in the recent ODI series against New Zealand in January, scoring 26, 24, and 11 in the three-matches.
Also, he is not the ODI captain anymore as he was replaced by Shubman Gill last year. He will turn 40 years old next year. Due to his growing age, his selection in the ODI World Cup squad has always been a topic of discussion.
Yeah I really want that trophy: Rohit Sharma confirms playing ODI World Cup 2027

Recently, Rohit appeared in an event with former England batter Kevin Pietersen. During the event, he broke his silence on playing the next ODI World Cup. The Indian opener said that he really wants to win that trophy.
“I will definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country that is something that I’ve always looked upon I’ve grown up watching this 50-over WC. Yeah I really want that trophy,” Rohit said.
Notably, Rohit failed to win the ODI World Cup in 2023, where he led India in the tournament. The Men-in-Blue were unbeaten in the league stage and dominated all other teams. However, they faced a huge setback against Australia in the final, losing by six wickets. The shocking defeat came as a big blow for Indian fans as well as Indian players.
Meanwhile, the veteran Indian batter will be next seen in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, which will begin in the last week of March. Rohit will play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the tournament. He will return to national duty in the away ODI series against England in July.
