BCCI has re-appointed T Dilip as the fielding coach of the Indian cricket team.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reappointed T Dilip as the fielding coach of the Indian Cricket Team. He has been handed a one-year temporary extension for the role by the BCCI. According to reports in Cricbuzz, ODI skipper Rohit Sharma played a big role in his reappointment.
Last month, the BCCI sacked three support staff members from their positions. Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, fielding coach Dilip, and Strength & Conditioning Coach Soham Desai were removed by the BCCI. It was due to India’s poor show in the previous test series against Australia.
Dilip was also the fielding coach during the tenure of former head coach Rahul Dravid. After the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June last year, Dravid and other support staff members quit their roles. However, Dilip’s contract was extended by the BCCI.
Rohit Sharma convinced Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI to re-appoint T Dilip
According to reports, India ODI skipper Sharma convinced head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI to re-appoint Dilip as the fielding coach. Sharma spoke to Gambhir and other BCCI officials and convinced them to bring Dilip back.
Notably, Dilip has been a close aide of Sharma. The Hyderabad-based coach worked with the Rohit Sharma-led India team that won the T20 World Cup 2024 last year and the Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Dilip will be part of the Indian Cricket Team during their forthcoming campaign against England. Team India will clash with England in a five-match test series starting June 20. The series will conclude in the first week of August.
Earlier, assistant coach Ryan Doeschate was going to replace Dilip. However, with his return, Doeschate will remain as the assistant coach. There are also reports that BCCI wanted to appoint a foreign player for the fielding coach, however, they were unable to find a suitable one.
Notably, Sharma retired from the longest format earlier this month. Hence, BCCI has appointed Shubman Gill as the new test skipper of India. Rishabh Pant has been picked as the new vice-captain in the red-ball format.
