The meeting was supposed to feature BCCI officials, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and others to discuss future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma with ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 in mind.
There are rumours that senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not communicated with head coach Gautam Gambhir, indicating that things are not going well in the Indian dressing room. The combo of Kohli and Rohit has reportedly avoided talking to Gambhir and has been training separately from the team, which has further worsened the divide.
Team India won a close-fought first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, and despite the win, multiple sources indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unhappy with the current dressing room environment and will host a meeting with Gautam Gambhir and two senior players to tackle the communication gap.
It was previously announced that, as Rohit and Kohli have retired from the other two formats and only participate in ODIs, their futures will be reviewed in the meeting prior to the second ODI.
BCCI cancels meeting during Raipur ODI to discuss future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

But according to Times of India journalist Gaurav Gupta, there won’t be a meeting to talk about the iconic pair’s future.
“There is NO such meeting in Raipur, or anywhere else, to discuss any communication issues between the selectors, team management & senior players..or any meeting to discuss the future of senior players, in the near future,” Gaurav Gupta stated.
Ever since Gautam Gambhir took over as the Indian team head coach from Rahul Dravid in July 2024, he has been focused on ending star culture in the Indian team dressing room. He reportedly targeted Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the two most senior batters.
The duo continued to feature in ODIs and tests under Gambhir, but after back-to-back bad performances against New Zealand and Australia, reports arose that Gambhir had urged the senior players to play in the Ranji Trophy to establish their worth.
This apparently didn’t sit well with Rohit and Kohli as they announced their abrupt test retirement in May 2025. The pair made their ODI comeback on the Australian tour, but before that, the head selector, Ajit Agarkar, indicated that for future ODI selection, both Rohit and Kohli need to play in the Vijay Hazare tournament.
