Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s new ODI captain.
Batting legend Rohit Sharma‘s tenure as ODI captain of the Indian Cricket Team ended on Saturday, October 4 as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the ODI squad for the Australia tour. The senior batter was replaced by Shubman Gill as captain, who now lead the side in two formats – tests and ODIs.
Rohit Sharma’s biggest triumph as ODI captain was leading the team to the title in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they won the tournament without losing a single game. Before taking over the charge of the team completely in December 2021, the India batter, who was the then vice-captain, led team in Virat Kohli’s absence when the then skipper was rested or missed games due to personal reasons. In that period, he also won Asia Cup 2018 as a captain.
However, after assuming the charge completely in 2021, he changed India’s fortunes in white-ball cricket. During his tenure, India enjoyed immense success in 50-over cricket and played aggressive brand of cricket, which Rohit led from the front. Because of that, the right-hander has always been lauded for his leadership skills by his teammates and experts.
In his ODI career, the right-hander captained India in 56 games. Not only did he captained the team well, but also did a great job as an opener as he is hailed as one of the best openers in 50-over cricket. As Rohit Sharma’s ODI captaincy comes to an end, below we glance at his complete record as ODI captain.
