Rahul Dravid was the captain of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2012 and 2013 editions.

Legendary cricketer and former India coach Rahul Dravid has been roped in by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) as their new head coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 edition. The development was confirmed by the RR franchise on Friday, September 6.

The former Indian cricketer previously coached the India senior men’s cricket team to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title victory in June, after which his tenure ended with the national side.

In the past, Dravid has captained the Rajasthan-based franchise for the two IPL seasons (2012 and 2013). After his retirement, he then became mentor and team director in IPL 2014 and 2015.

In 2016, Dravid joined Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) and was with them until he became the head of BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in 2019.

The legendary cricketer then served as the head coach of the Indian cricket team from late 2021, replacing Ravi Shastri. During Dravid’s tenure, the Indian cricket team played three ICC finals across all three formats.

Team India played ICC World Test Championship and ICC ODI World Cup finals in 2023. Sadly, they lost both the championship matches at the hands of Australia. In 2024, the Men in Blue lifted the ICC T20 World Cup under Dravid’s coaching stint.

Rajasthan Royals appoints Rahul Dravid as head coach ahead of IPL 2025

The 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals, confirmed Dravid’s appointment as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2025 edition. The Rajasthan-based franchise posted a special video on Dravid’s appointment on their official handle ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) on September 6.

The Royals have done pretty well in the last three editions of the IPL. Rajasthan reached the finals in the IPL 2022 edition. In the 2024 season, the franchise finished third at the end of group stage. Sadly, the Sanju Samson-led RR suffered defeat in the Qualifier 2 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad by 36 runs.

With Dravid’s appointment as new head coach of the franchise, the 2008 champions will be aiming to win their second title in the upcoming IPL 2025 season.
