"I got to know.." Ruturaj Gaikwad reveals when MS Dhoni informed him of CSK captaincy for IPL 2024
MS Dhoni handed over Ruturaj Gaikwad CSK captain right before start of the IPL 2024.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) newly appointed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has revealed when legendary MS Dhoni informed him to take the leadership role for five-time champions CSK in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Ahead of the Southern Derby clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), defending champions CSK shocked the whole cricketing community with the news of opener Gaikwad replacing legendary Dhoni as the new leader of the team. The news was confirmed on the IPL’s official social media handle and then from CSK on March 21.
“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season.” stated CSK in the release.
I got to know last week, but Mahi bhai hinted at it last year: Ruturaj Gaikwad
In the IPL 2024 match 1 between CSK and RCB, newly appointed captain Gaikwad opened up during the toss how five-time IPL-winning captain MS Dhoni hinted about the change in leadership role. Gaikwad also added that he feels privileged to replace him as a skipper but added that he aims to create his own legacy instead of filling someone else’s shoes.
“Feel privledged. But I want to try and be in my shoes, not fill anybody’s shoes. (On captaincy) I got to know last week, but Mahi bhai hinted at it last year. Everyone is experienced here, sadly we are missing Conway and Pathirana. We’ve got Rachin and Mitchell coming in though this year so they should fit in well. Looks like a good pitch, a hard surface that should hold up well for the second innings. Four overseas – Mitchell, Rachin, Fizz and Theekshana. The domestic player Sameer Rizvi is making his debut as well,” CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said Ravi Shastri during the toss.
Meanwhile, RCB captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to bat first in the inaugural match of the 17th edition of the IPL at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
