Shubman Gill will captain India in the test and ODI series against South Africa.

Indian Cricket Team’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has acknowledged Shubman Gill’s increasing workload ahead of the multi-format series against South Africa Cricket Team, saying that it is quite challenging to play all formats. Gill is among the few Indian players who are regular members of the national side in all three formats.

The right-handed batter is gearing up to captain India in the two-match test series against South Africa, scheduled to commence on November 14 with the opening game at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Later, he will also captain the side in three ODI games against the Proteas and will serve as deputy to captain Suryakumar Yadav in the five-match T20I series.

Last month, ahead of the Australia tour, the 26-year-old was appointed as the ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. While Gill has rocked with his batting performance in test cricket, he has struggled to come up with consistent shows in white-ball cricket. He failed to make a mark with the bat in the recent ODI and T20I series against Australia.

Speaking to the press ahead of the Kolkata test, India’s assistant coach Doeschate hailed Gill for taking up the challenge to play in all three formats.

“It is super challenging to play all the formats. That is why you see fewer and fewer players playing all formats. Shubman has taken up this challenge and is up for it. The boys are putting up so much work to be in good shape for the challenge,” he said.

Gill was appointed as the test captain in May, and since then, he has played seven tests, three ODIs, and 13 T20Is, without missing a single campaign of the Indian Cricket Team. He tasted a lot of success in his first assignment as test captain against England, leading the team to a 2-2 draw in the five-match series and finishing as the highest run-scorer of the series. He was also adjudged Player of the Series.

Last month, India grabbed a 2-0 clean sweep in the two-match series against the West Indies, with Gill smacking an unbeaten century in the second test in Delhi. However, his first stint as ODI captain did not go well as the Men in Blue lost 2-1 to Australia by facing back-to-back defeats in the first two games.
