Jasprit Bumrah’s 5/83 helped India wrap England’s first innings for 465 runs.
Sachin Tendulkar lauded India pacer Jasprit Bumrah for his lion-hearted effort as he ended up with five wickets to his name as England’s first innings in the ongoing first test wrapped up for 465 runs on day 3.
Bumrah claimed 5/83 at an economy of 3.36 in 24.4 overs in a nearly solo effort. Bumrah became the second Indian bowler to pick a five-wicket haul at Headingley in a test and also registered his 10th five-wicket haul in SENA countries.
It was also Bumrah’s 12th five-wicket haul in away tests, a record he equaled with former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev, who took 12 five wicket-hauls in 66 away tests. Bumrah achieved the feat in just 34 tests. Irfan Pathan (7 in 15), Zaheer Khan (8 in 54), and Ishant Sharma (9 in 63) come next in the list of Indian bowlers with most away five-wicket hauls.
Bumrah dismissed Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue as England were bowled out for 465, giving India a slim 6-run lead.
A no-ball and three missed chances: Sachin Tendulkar congratulates Jasprit Bumrah for his fifer
In addition to praising Jasprit Bumrah for taking five wickets against England at Leeds on Sunday, Sachin Tendulkar quietly called notice to India’s lost fielding opportunities. India dismissed England for 465 thanks to Bumrah’s fifer, but if all catches had been made, the score may have been considerably lower.
Bumrah’s bowling alone resulted in four catches for India, three from Yashasvi Jaiswal and one from Ravindra Jadeja. Harry Brook benefited twice, on 46 and 82. Shardul Thakur caught the England batsman off Prasidh Krishna on 99, just shy of a century, but he had already done a great deal of damage.
Posting on X, Tendulkar wrote, “Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and nau wickets.”
England were at 327/5 at the beginning of the second session on day 3, with Jamie Smith (29*) and Harry Brook (57*). Smith (40 in 52 balls, with five fours and a six), Chris Woakes (38 in 55 balls, with three fours and two sixes), and Brydon Carse (22 in 23 balls, with four boundaries) all amassed valuable runs as Brook persisted in his counterattack. England made 465 runs.
India scored 471 runs in the first innings, while England were bowled out for 465, six runs behind, thanks in large part to outstanding efforts from Prasidh Krishna (3/128) and Bumrah (5/83). Day two saw some outstanding batting performances from Ollie Pope (106 off 137 balls, including 14 boundaries) and Ben Duckett (62 off 94 balls with nine fours).
