Rishabh Pant suffered the injury while trying to reverse sweep a yorker of Chris Woakes.

India test vice-captain Rishabh Pant garnered tremendous respect from the cricketing world, including legend Sachin Tendulkar, on Thursday (July 24), when he bravely came out to bat on day two of India’s fourth test against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, despite suffering a terrible injury.

Pant fractured his toe on day one of the Manchester test while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes’ delivery. The 27-year-old was forced to retire injured and was clearly in pain. Earlier in the day, reports said Pant had been given a six-week recuperation period and would miss the last test at The Oval.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Jurel would be taking the gloves and that Pant would not be keeping wickets. He will bat, though, if the team needs him to.

Many people thought that after India lost nine wickets, the star batsman would come out to bat, but he came on the field after Shardul Thakur was dismissed (6th wicket). Pant appeared on the stairs, coming down from the pavilion. The entire crowd at the Old Trafford ground stood and applauded Pant’s guts and courage.

Pant hobbled onto the field and got a pat on the head from Shardul Thakur. Pant batted valiantly and even kept out vicious yorkers from Stokes and Archer that were directed at his injured foot. Pant even hobbled for runs and had to refuse quick singles.

After returning, Pant scored 17 more runs to reach his half-century before being removed for 54 by Jofra Archer. India managed 358 runs in the first innings thanks to his contribution, despite Ben Stokes’ 5/72.

India icon Sachin Tendulkar praised Rishabh Pant’s brave fifty at Old Trafford while batting with an injured foot on the second day of the fourth test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.

‘Resilience is about playing through pain and rising above it.@RishabhPant17 showed tremendous character by walking back into the game with an injury and delivering a performance like that. His fifty is a powerful reminder of the grit and determination it takes to represent your country. A brave effort, and one that will be remembered for a long time. Well played, Rishabh!,” wrote Sachin on X.
