Sam Billings has so far played three tests, 28 ODIs and 38 T20Is for England.

The last couple of years have not been great for the England white-ball team. Their performance has declined drastically, which has raised many issues within the team. As a result, Jos Buttler made it clear that he will not be going to lead the white-ball side anymore after England’s debacle at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

This was the third consecutive ICC event where England couldn’t perform as per expectations. Not just in big tournaments, they are finding it hard in the bilateral series as well. And now the next challenge for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is to find someone ideal for the captaincy role.

Though there are few names available within the team who can be the next white-ball captain for England. Star batter Harry Brook, who was recently named vice-captain, is the front runner to get this role. However, a veteran English star has shown interest in leading the national side in ODIs and T20Is.

Sam Billings wants to be England’s white-ball captain after Jos Buttler’s resignation

Veteran English keeper Sam Billings has shown his interest in England’s white-ball captaincy. Sam Billings has thrown his name in this captaincy musical chair and said that he is willing to take that job.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Billings said, “I’d be honoured, you would obviously jump at an opportunity like that. I feel like I can add value. I’ve not had a conversation with anyone, but from a leadership point of view, I’ve loved the time over the past few years where I’ve had some really good success.”

Sam Billings has been out of England’s team for more than two years now. He played his last international match in November 2022, which was an ODI against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). However, he has been playing franchise cricket globally and has also done the captaincy for some teams.

Although Sam Billings believes that Ben Stokes is an ideal guy to lead England in white-ball cricket, he also thinks that Stokes is largely focused on prioritizing test cricket. The veteran keeper also named Harry Brook as one of the the potential leaders, who fits all criteria to become the next white-ball captain.
