Former Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya has been named as the new cricket consultant to SLC.

In a move aimed at revitalizing Sri Lankan cricket, Sri Lanka Cricket Board has appointed the legendary batter Sanath Jayasuriya as their cricket consultant for the next year. The decision reflects the board’s commitment to improving the all-round development within the country’s cricketing infrastructure. As cricket fans are eagerly anticipating the impact of this strategic move, Jayasuriya is set to play a pivotal role in overseeing players and coaching staff, operating from the prestigious High-Performance Center at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The decision to bring Jayasuriya on board comes in the wake of a comprehensive restructuring of the national selection panel, led by former opener Upul Tharanga.

Sanath Jayasuriya appointed as SLC cricket consultant

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board, in a media release, outlined the scope of Jayasuriya’s responsibilities, emphasizing his role in elevating the professionalism of national programs and ensuring excellence among players and coaching staff.

Under this role, Jayasuriya will be responsible for ensuring that SLC national programmes achieve an optimum level of professionalism and that all players and coaching staff are monitored in order to deliver excellence,” the SLC stated in their release.

“Accordingly, he will oversee the training, coaching requirements of all teams aligned with the high-performance center. He will also establish national specialist skills programmes with key staff aligned to lead roles within each skill discipline, among several other tasks,” it added.

This strategic appointment comes at a crucial juncture for Sri Lanka, seeking a resurgence in their cricketing fortunes after a poor performance in the recent ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Placed ninth in the 10-team table with just two wins from nine matches, the national team is in desperate need of rejuvenation. Jayasuriya’s wealth of experience and cricket acumen are expected to inject fresh energy into the setup, offering insights and guidance to propel Sri Lanka towards success on the international stage.
