Sanjay Manjrekar feels Rohit Sharma did not make a big impact in test cricket.
Reputed cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has made a bold statement on India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma. Manjrekar feels that Rohit cannot be considered among the all-time greatest Indian batters due to his inferior test record.
Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from test cricket earlier in May, played 67 tests in his career, smacking 4301 runs in 116 innings at an average of 40.58. He also slammed 12 centuries and 18 fifties in the format, including one double ton.
Rohit, who is currently active only in ODIs, led India to the trophy in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Earlier this year, he guided the team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title. Notably, Sharma accounts for three double centuries in ODI cricket.
Rohit Sharma does not fit in all-time Indian batting great list: Sanjay Manjrekar

During a conversation on the Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Manjrekar said that Rohit does not fit in the list of all-time Indian batting greats as he did not make a big impact in test cricket. However, Manjrekar hailed Rohit’s batting record in ODI cricket and his contribution to the team.
“Rohit Sharma does not fit in the all-time Indian Batting Great list because we’re talking about legends like Gavaskar (Sunil), Tendulkar (Sachin), Dravid (Rahul), and Virat (Kohli). Rohit does not quite make it there,” he said.
“But if you look at one-day cricket, selflessness, or captainship, then you have to mention Rohit Sharma. Especially after the 2023 World Cup, the love people have for him is on another level. People saw that he was never thinking about himself; he was willing to sacrifice his own interests for the team’s advantage”, he added.
“That’s his real speciality. His easy domination in limited-overs cricket was always pleasing, almost making 300 runs in one ODI innings. But when you talk of all-time Indian Batting Great, Test cricket holds more weightage, I don’t think he made a big impact in that format,” Manjrekar further said.
Meanwhile, Rohit will next play for India during the ODI series against Australia. He will lead the team in three ODIs Down Under from October 19 to 25. He last played competitive cricket in June for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
