Sanjiv Goenka said that every franchise will wish to have a player like Rohit Sharma.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has opened up on potentially buying veteran cricketer Rohit Sharma in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.

Earlier, it was rumoured that LSG had kept a budget of INR 50 crore to acquire ODI and test captain Sharma, should the Mumbai Indians opener be available in the mega auction. The rumor spread like fire on social media.

However, the Super Giants owner Goenka has finally opened up about the ongoing speculation about whether his franchise is pondering over buying opener Rohit in the mega auction.

This is all unnecessary: Sanjiv Goenka

During an interview with Sports Tak, Goenka admitted that any IPL franchise would want to have a player of Rohit’s calibre. However, Goenka clarified that these rumors regarding his franchise keeping INR 50 crore for Rohit are all unnecessarily and unrealistic.

“Do you even know if Rohit Sharma is entering the auction? This is all unnecessary. It all depends on whether Mumbai Indians release Rohit Sharma or not. And even if Rohit comes to auction… if you put 50 per cent of your purse on one player, how will you buy other play?” Goenka said.

“Everyone wishes to have the best captain and best players. It’s not about wanting. It all depends on what you have, and what is available, and what all you can do with it. Everyone franchise will have the same desire,” Goenka added.

The KL Rahul-led LSG narrowly missed reaching the playoffs in the IPL 2024 edition. The Lucknow-based franchise played 14 league stage matches and won seven matches. The franchise finished with 14 points, but due to inferior NRR compared to the fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow couldn’t qualify for the playoffs.
