Sanju Samson chose Rohit Sharma’s name during a chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on latter’s YouTube show.

India wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson recently appeared on former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube show. During the show, Ashwin asked Samson about his cricketing idol. While many wicket-keeper batsmen often name MS Dhoni or Adam Gilchrist as their cricketing idol, Samson picked Rohit Sharma’s name.

Sharma, who is the current ODI skipper, led India to two ICC titles within a span of one year as captain. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team won ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title in June last year by defeating South Africa in the final.

Earlier this year, in March, the Men in Blue won ICC Champions Trophy 2025 by defeating New Zealand in the final. After fulfilling the dreams of many cricket fans for a long-awaited ICC title, Sharma earned a lot of appreciation from the Indian cricket fraternity.

Samson shares a close bond with Sharma, as the latter also gave him many opportunities in the national team under his captaincy. When Ashwin asked his cricketing idol on his YouTube show “Kutti stories with Ashwin,” Samson took Sharma’s name.

Moreover, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper chose his teammate Vaibhav Suryavanshi, when asked about a modern-day player he gets excited to watch. Suryanvanshi made his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and became the youngest batsman to smash a century in the tournament’s history.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Samson has asked his franchise to either release or trade him as he looks for a fresh start in the tournament. Under Samson’s captaincy, RR finished at ninth spot in the points table in IPL 2025, winning just four games out of 14 matches.
