Pakistan first toured Australia for an international series in 1964.
Touring Australia is regarded as one of the most challenging tasks for any cricketing team. Known for their fast and bouncy pitches, the Australian conditions pose a unique challenge for visiting teams and really tough one for the Asian sides.
While Pakistan have been one of the most successful Asian teams in cricketing history, their record in Australia is underwhelming. Despite having several great fast bowlers on their side across eras, the Men In Green have struggled on the Australian shores.
In this article, we will explore the series and tournaments where Pakistan defied the odds to taste success on Australian soil.
International series won by Pakistan in Australia:
1. Benson & Hedges World Cup 1991/92
The most remarkable moment of Pakistan’s cricket history came in Australia in 1992 when they lifted the World Cup trophy under the leadership of Imran Khan. The Pakistani side defeated several teams including Zimbabwe, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and England to lift the cup.
They had a torrid start, winning only one out of their first five matches. But then they won three in a row to sneak into the semi-final, where they beat New Zealand and then thrashed England in the final.
Wasim Akram had a stunning tournament, taking 18 wickets in the campaign. He was also named Player of the Match in the final for his all-round performance of 33* (18) and 3/49.
2. Carlton & United Series 1996/97 – Tri-series
Pakistan registered their second triumph on Australian soil by winning the 1996/97 Carlton & United series, which was a tri-series involving hosts Australia and West Indies.
Pakistan defeated West Indies by 62 runs in the final to register a memorable win. Shahid Afridi was named Player of the Series for his 159 runs and 11 wickets in the tournament.
3. ODI Series 2002 – Bilateral
Pakistan’s first-ever bilateral series win in Australia came in 2002. The Asian side defeated Australia in the second and third ODIs of the three-match series to clinch the series 2-1.
Shoaib Akhtar was named Player of the Series for his seven wickets in the series. Imran Nazir top-scored in the series, registering 111 runs in three games.
4. ODI Series 2024 – Bilateral
Pakistan’s most recent success in Australia came in the 2024 ODI series. After losing the first game of the three-ODI series, the Pakistan team bounced back strongly with wins in the next two matches.
Haris Rauf played a pivotal role for the Asian side, taking 10 wickets in three games, while the batting department was led by Saim Ayub, who finished the series with 125 runs to his name.
