Australian batter Shaun Marsh announces retirement from cricket

Shaun Marsh will be playing his final professional game against Sydney Thunder.

Veteran Australian top-order batter Shaun Marsh has followed his Melbourne Renegades teammate Aaron Finch and announced his retirement from professional cricket after the end of the ongoing BBL 2023-24 season. Part of the Melbourne Renegades, Shaun Marsh played a crucial role for Renegades in Melbourne Derby win on Saturday. Shaun Marsh scored a half-century against Melbourne Stars.

The 40-year-old Shaun Marsh played a brilliant knock of 64 runs in 49 balls with 10 fours to chase down a target of 138 runs against Stars at Dockland Stadium. Shaun Marsh has played 38 tests, 73 ODIs and 15 T20I games for Australia so far. Marsh will be saying goodbye to his professional career after the game against Sydney Thunder at Giants Stadium in Sydney on 17th January.

‘Made great friends in Renegades’

While announcing his retirement, Shaun Marsh said that he loved playing for Melbourne Renegades. Marsh said in a statement to Renegades, “I have loved playing for the Renegades. I’ve met some great people over the last five years, and the friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime.” He also thanked Renegades support staff and for backing him in the BBL. 

Shaun Marsh didn’t forget his first BBL team, Perth Scorchers. Marsh added, “I owe a lot to the Scorchers. I’ve got some fond memories of playing in Perth and really enjoyed my time there. The back-to-back titles are up there for me as the most enjoyable moments I’ve experienced on a cricket field” Marsh has so far scored 181 runs in his five BBL 2023-24 innings with three half-centuries. 

Shaun Marsh earned the limelight from Indian Premier League. He had a consistent run for Kings XI Punjab in the first few seasons of the league. Marsh has scored over 5293 runs for Australia in international cricket. Marsh scored 13 international centuries in his decade long career for Australia. He was also the first-ever winner of the Orange Cap in the IPL.
