Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has recalled an incident when he lost his cool following a run-out involving Virat Kohli. The left-handed batsman revealed that he abused a lot following the incident and expressed his rage in the dressing room.

Dhawan and Kohli are considered as two of the greats of Indian cricket. Together, they were the backbone of the Indian side in ODIs alongside Rohit Sharma. The left-hander was the regular opener for India in white-ball formats under Kohli’s captaincy and made valuable contributions.

Dhawan announced his retirement from international cricket and Indian domestic cricket in 2024, while Kohli has pulled down the curtains in tests and T20Is, and is only active in ODIs. However, back in the days, they formed a formidable pair for India, stitching a lot of big partnerships.

During a podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani, Dhawan recalled an incident when he got angry with Kohli following a run-out in South Africa. He said that he expressed his rage on the field and in the dressing room after the incident.

“I was in South Africa, Virat ran me out. At that time, I got very angry… My (IPL) auction, too, hadn’t gone well. I wasn’t able to accept that as well. So, that was there, and then this (run out) happened,” he said.

“I abused a lot… he (Kohli) was in the middle, I was venting out in the dressing room – not at him, but like how batsmen usually would. But we have our understanding because we know it isn’t intentional. This happens in cricket,” he added.

The former Indian player also revealed another incident when he and Kohli fought with each other while playing football during a warm-up session.

“Virat and I fought once. We shoulder-tackled each other once while playing football during a warm-up session. For a second, we got angry. Slowly, we stopped playing football in warm-ups because people would fight. It happens, there are so many athletes, aggressive, each one is big in his own right,” he recalled.

Meanwhile, Dhawan was part of India Champions in World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 tournament in August. On the other hand, Kohli is pulling up his socks for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. He is expected to be part of India squad for the three-match ODI series Down Under. He last played for India in March during ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
