Shikhar Dhawan is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL history with 6769 runs.

Veteran Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on August 22, 2024, through an emotional social media video. In the retirement video, Dhawan thanked his family, coaches, and teammates for their love and support.

The left-hander made his ODI debut in 2010 and was dismissed for a duck on debut. However, he returned to the national side and made his first big splash in international cricket in 2013 when he smashed an 85-ball century on test debut against Australia in Mohali, which is the fastest test hundred by a debutant.

He took giant strides in ODI cricket then. In the 2013 Champions Trophy, he was the leading run-scorer of the tournament and helped India win the trophy. He was India’s highest-scorer in the Asia Cup 2014, World Cup 2015, Champions Trophy 2017 and Asia Cup 2018.

His career suffered a downfall after 2019. He last played for India in 2022.

He said, “I am leaving with peace in my heart that I played so long for India. I’ve told myself don’t feel sad that you won’t play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country.”

“I always had one goal in mind that was to play for India and I achieved it thanks to a lot of people. First of all my family, my childhood coaches Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, under their guidance, I learnt cricket. Then my entire team with whom I played for years, got another family, fame and everyone’s love and support. As it’s said that to move ahead in the story you need to flip over the pages. Hence, I’m also doing that, I’m announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket.

“And now when I’m bidding adieu to my cricketing journey, I have the satisfaction that I played a lot for my country.”

Overall, Shikhar Dhawan played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is, scoring 2315, 6793 and 1579 runs respectively. The left-hander notched up 17 ODI centuries and seven test hundreds.

Has Shikhar Dhawan retired from IPL?

Yes, Shikhar Dhawan seems to have retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. In his retirement video, Dhawan mentioned that he is “bidding adieu to my cricketing journey” and the video included a Punjab Kings jersey and an SRH memento in his cabinet.

Punjab Kings posted a photo of Dhawan in their jersey with “Thank You Shikhar Dhawan” titled. The franchise also posted a video of the cricketer during his time at Punjab Kings.

So it can be concluded that Dhawan has retired from the IPL as well.

In the IPL, he played for Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings. He’s currently the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL history behind Virat Kohli.
