Shikhar Dhawan was the Player of the Tournament in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.
Legendary Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his international and domestic retirement on August 24, 2024. The left-handed batter posted an emotional video on his social media handles where he announced his retirement decision.
“It’s important to turn the page to move forward in a story, and in life. That’s why, I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I’ve told myself to not feel sad that you won’t play for India again, but feel happy that you played for the country,” Dhawan said in his retirement video.
The 38-year-old Dhawan last played competitive cricket in April, leading the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2024. The veteran cricketer retires with 24 centuries (17 in ODIs and seven in tests) in 269 international matches.
In an international career that spanned over 13 years, Dhawan achieved many milestones. Dhawan, who is hailed by the fans as India’s ‘Mr. ICC‘, helped the Indian cricket team lift the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. The 38-year-old was also the player of the tournament and also the highest run-getter.

Dhawan played two ICC ODI World Cups, in 2015 and 2019. In 10 matches across the two tournaments, the elegant batter amassed 537 runs at an admirable average of 53.70. The Indian opener smashed three centuries and one half-century. Dhawan’s highest score in the World Cup came against South Africa in the 2015 edition when he scored 137 runs in Melbourne.

The former left-handed opener played two editions of the ICC Champions Trophy (2013 and 2017). In it, he scored 701 runs in 10 matches at an impressive average of 77.78.
The left-handed batter notched up three centuries and as many half-centuries in the Champions Trophy. He helped India lift the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 with his impressive performances with the bat.
3. Best average in ICC 50-over tournaments among batters with at least 1000 runs
Dhawan has the best average in the ICC ODI tournaments among the 51 batters who have scored at least 1000 runs in these prestigious events.
Dhawan’s average is 65.15, which is just a bit better than Virat Kohli’s 64.55 in the ICC ODI tournaments. The 38-year-old Dhawan averaged 53.70 in World Cups (ten innings) and 77.88 in Champions Trophy matches (ten innings).
