Shreyas Iyer completes 2000 ODI runs, overtakes Virat Kohli in elite list

Shreyas Iyer crossed 2000 ODI runs when he scored 82 against Sri Lanka in ICC CWC 2023 match.
Team India posted a mammoth total of 357 runs against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Indian batters have smashed Sri Lanka bowlers all over the park at Wankhede Stadium to give them a huge target of 358 runs to remain alive in the semi-finals race. India’s assault began with Virat Kohli (88) and Shubman Gill (92), 189 runs stand for the second wicket. After that Shreyas Iyer smashed 82 runs in his 56-ball innings.
Shreyas Iyer has been struggling in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 so far, and against Sri Lanka, he has tried to give answers to the questions raised about his performance. Shreyas Iyer came in after Shubman Gill and departed in the nervous 90s. Iyer had a big job on his hands with the rotation of strikes as well as not losing any wickets. In the meantime, Shreyas Iyer also completed a milestone in his ODI career.
Iyer overtakes Virat Kohli
Shreyas Iyer completed 2000 ODI runs in his career with his 82-run knock. He needed 65 runs before walking out to bat against Sri Lanka at Wankhede. Shreyas took 49 innings to complete this career milestone and became the third-quickest Indian batter to do so. Iyer took 49 innings and overtook big names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Sourav Ganguly. Virat Kohli took 53 ODI innings to complete his 2000 runs.
Shubman Gill (38 innings), Shikhar Dhawan (48 innings), and Shreyas Iyer (49) are the only three batters from India to complete this career milestone under 50 ODI innings. Sourav Ganguly and Navjot Singh Sidhu are the joint quickest 4th with 52 innings taken to complete 2000 ODI runs. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are the joint 5th with 53 innings taken to complete 2000 ODI runs. Shreyas Iyer smashed his 16th ODI half-century in ODIs.

Team India had a poor opening start as Sri Lanka’s left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma (4) in the second ball of the innings. After Rohit’s dismissal, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill took charge and added 189 runs for the second wicket. Along with Shreyas Iyer, wicket-keeper KL Rahul (21) and Ravindra Jadeja (35) also contributed to India's total. Dilshan Madushanka picked up five wickets in the innings.
