Shreyas Iyer scored 530 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Shreyas Iyer ended India’s long-standing No. 4 batting issue in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, scoring 530 runs in 11 innings at an average of 66.25, including two centuries and three fifties. However, under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, he was shifted down the order during the ODI series in Sri Lanka last year and failed to make runs on extremely spin-friendly surfaces in Colombo.

The 30-year-old has been in outstanding form in domestic cricket this season. The Mumbai batsman has scored 325 runs in five innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 at an average of over 325, being dismissed only once. His impressive tally includes two centuries.

The ICC had asked all participating teams to announce their squads for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 by January 13. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested an extension and is set to announce the squad on January 18-19.

India will enter the tournament as one of the favourites. The Asian giants have been in excellent form in limited-overs cricket in recent years and are likely to retain the core of their batting lineup from the 50-over World Cup 2023.

Iyer has now shared his views on his batting position in the ODI side.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Iyer stressed that he is willing to bat anywhere in the lineup. He also mentioned that he and KL Rahul played a crucial role during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

He said, “I’m flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order. KL and I, we played that important role in the middle during the World Cup. We had a great season together. It was just the last bit [the final] that we couldn’t execute the way we wanted to.

He added, “It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy [side] to represent the country.
