Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury while fielding in the third IND vs AUS ODI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided a fresh update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury on Saturday, November 1. The governing body has revealed that Iyer is now stable and has been discharged from the hospital but will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will fly back to India only when he becomes completely fit.

The right-handed batsman was injured during the third ODI between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney. While attempting a catch of Alex Carey, Iyer put in a brilliant dive but fell badly on the ground, injuring his rib in the process.

He appeared in immediate pain and left the field with the team physio and did not return to the field. It was revealed that as he went into the dressing room, his parameters were extremely low and was shifted to hospital. The reports revealed that he had suffered a laceration of the spleen, which resulted in internal bleeding. He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and underwent a special procedure.

In an official statement, BCCI revealed that Iyer has been discharged from Sydney Hospital on Saturday (November 1) and is recovering well. BCCI also thanked medical professionals involved in Iyer’s treatment.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure,” BCCI said in an official statement.

“He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same. He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the statement added.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly,” it further added.

Meanwhile, Iyer will need about two months to recover from his injury. As a result, he is expected to miss the ODI series against South Africa next month. Ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025, the 30-year-old was appointed as the new vice-captain in ODIs.
