Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, KKR won their third IPL title in 2024, defeating SRH in the final.

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has stated that Shreyas Iyer wasn’t properly credited when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2024, and instead of him, someone else received all the credit.

After scoring 351 runs from 14 innings at an average of 39 and two fifties, Iyer helped KKR to their third IPL championship in 2024. Chandrakant Pandit was the head coach of KKR at the time, and Gautam Gambhir served as their mentor.

However, discussions on payment went downhill between Shreyas Iyer and KKR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and he was not retained by the franchise. At the mega auction, Punjab Kings bought Shreyas Iyer for INR 26.75 crores and soon announced him as captain of the franchise.

All the plaudits were given to someone else: Sunil Gavaskar on Shreyas Iyer being ill-treated at KKR

Gavaskar recently commended Iyer’s leadership abilities, pointing to his success with KKR, but claimed that all the credit went “somewhere else” despite his subtle on-field choices.

“He didn’t get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It’s the captain who plays a major role in what’s happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Shreyas Iyer is leading PBKS from the front, and the franchise has played extremely well under his leadership. PBKS have won 7 games out of 11 matches thus far.

With 15 points from 11 games, PBKS are presently ranked third in the standings. With four fifties to his name and 405 runs from 11 innings at an average of 50.62, Iyer has also maintained his strong form from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

One of the main reasons for Punjab’s success has been Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant leadership and rich form with the bat. With a victory in the forthcoming match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur, the Punjab Kings will have a fantastic opportunity to move up to the top of the points table.
