Punjab Kings acquired Shreyas Iyer for a whopping INR 26.75 crore.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has expressed his desire to establish himself at the No.3 spot in T20s ahead of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 30-year-old was roped in by Punjab Kings for a whopping INR 26.75 crore and was appointed captain weeks before IPL 2025.

Iyer is coming into this tournament after performing well in ODIs. He was India’s highest run-scorer in their title-winning ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, scoring 243 runs in five innings. He also led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL trophy in 2024. However, he has not been able to make a mark in the Indian T20I side.

Speaking at the pre-tournament press conference, Iyer said he wants to establish himself at the No. 3 spot for Punjab this season and is clear about his role.

Iyer said, “We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be number 3. That’s what I’m focusing on. I wouldn’t say we are planning and thinking about what number I will bat at.

This time I’m quite clear about that position. I’m going to focus on that number. As long as the coach gives me approval.” he added.

Punjab Kings have strengthened their batting lineup and have some exciting names at their disposal, including Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, and Azmatullah Omarzai.

PBKS are among the three sides, along with Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have not won the IPL despite participating in all editions.

Iyer said the absence of a trophy is an opportunity. He added, “The importance is to win the trophy. There is no pressure (of Punjab having never won the IPL). It is an opportunity.”
