Shreyas Iyer last played a test in February 2024 and a T20I in December 2023.
After missing out on India‘s tour of England 2025, Shreyas Iyer is all set to return to India’s test and T20I squads. According to a report in TOI, selectors are looking forward to including Iyer in India’s squad for Asia Cup 2025 and the home test series against West Indies and South Africa.
Iyer last played for India during ICC Champions 2025 earlier this year, where he finished as the highest run-scorer for the team with 243 runs in five matches. The 30-year-old then led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 in June after being appointed as captain of the side.
The right-handed batsman has been overlooked by selectors in T20Is and tests for more than a year. His last T20I game was against Australia in December 2023, while his last test match was against England in February 2024.

Selectors believe Shreyas Iyer will strengthen India’s middle-order- Reports
While speaking to TOI, sources close to developments revealed that selectors believe Iyer will help to strengthen India’s middle-order across all three formats. Moreover, selectors also feel that Iyer’s expertise against spin will be crucial during the home test series against West Indies and South Africa.
“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy,” sources were quoted as saying by TOI.
“The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against West Indies and South Africa,” they further added.
Asia Cup 2025 will commence on September 9 and selectors are expected to meet later this month to finalise the squad for the campaign. After the completion of Asia Cup 2025 on September 28, India will host West Indies for a two-match test series in October. The test series against South Africa will be played in November.
Across 14 tests so far, Iyer has mustered 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86 with five half-centuries and one century. He will be next seen in Duleep Trophy 2025-26, which begins on August 28. Iyer is part of West Zone team in the tournament.
