Shreyas Iyer scored 53 runs in India’s win over Australia in 5th T20I in Bengaluru.

Shreyas Iyer returned to Indian T20I side after a long break and played the last two T20Is against Australia recently. He also played a winning hand in India’s victory in the 5th and final T20I match, which handed them the five-match series 4-1.

India had fielded a young side under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, and the team exceeded the expectations with their performances. In the final T20I, India were asked to bat first in Bengaluru. Thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant 53 with 5 fours and 2 sixes, 21 from Yashasvi Jaiswal, 24 from Jitesh Sharma, and 31 from 15 balls by Axar Patel, India posted 160/8 in 20 overs.

Jason Behrendorff and Ben Dwarshuis picked two wickets each.

In the chase, Travis Head with 28 and Ben McDermott with 54 shined for Australia, but excellent bowling by India kept Australia to 154/8, and India won by 6 runs. Mukesh Kumar, with 3/32, was the pick of the bowlers, while Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh picked two scalps each.

Axar Patel was given the player of the match award, while Ravi Bishnoi won the player of the series award.

Shreyas Iyer wants to bowl

For a long time, India have struggled to find top-order hitters willing to risk their arm, which would add depth to the bowling. In the recently finished World Cup, India tried out players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Suryakumar Yadav, but not Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer, who played a fine knock in the fifth and final T20I against Australia on Sunday, revealed that he has been longing to bowl for India.

Iyer has bowled just 7.3 overs for India in international cricket and given away 43 runs without claiming a wicket. However, in 65 first-class 140 List-A and 199 T20s, Iyer has picked up 10 wickets combined.

“I have been longing to bowl, but with the strength and conditioning coaches, right now you are not going to bowl for some time’. That’s the sad part of it,” Iyer said to Jio Cinema after India’s win in the 5th T20I.

India will now have a break for a while, before flying to South Africa for an all-format tour of 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 tests.
