Shreyas Iyer will get ruled out of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, predicts Gautam Gambhir

India's WC winning star Gautam Gambhir made a bold claim on Shreyas Iyer.

Asia Cup 2023 was seen as an opportunity for team India to fix their all broken pieces as they played with full-strength squad putting aside all the injury concerns. KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah were back in the Indian setup after spending a lot of time out from the game. Team India got a fruitful result and became champions of the Asia Cup 2023. Along with the championship, team India have also carried a few injuries once again as Axar Patel was ruled out of the final game against Sri Lanka, and Shreyas Iyer also missed out most of the games in the tournament. 

Gambhir predicts Iyer's future

Former Indian opening batter Gautam Gambhir has given his opinion on the persisting injury concerns in team India. Gambhir also feels that Shreyas Iyer might get replaced in the World Cup 2023 squad. Gambhir said in the Post-match show on Star Sports, “It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for the Asia Cup, play one match, and then again become unfit. I don’t think after this team management will pick him up for such a big tournament. You will see in the coming days Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him.” 

Shreyas Iyer missed the entire Super 4 round and final due the back spasms. Iyer got treatment for his back injury at the National Cricket Academy which kept him aside for 5 months. Gautam Gambhir further added, “Imagine if a player suffers from a spasm or some other thing then you can not find a replacement. So if Iyer hasn’t been fit in this tournament then it is very difficult for him to be part of the World Cup because of his injury and then we don’t even know how his form is presently. Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back and after which he played only one game.” 

Shreyas Iyer batted in only one innings against Pakistan where he got out on just 14 runs. Against Nepal, He didn’t get a chance to bat as captain Rohit Sharma along with Shubman Gill finished the game for India and defeated Nepal by 10 wickets. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir also raised questions over NCA on fast-tracking of Shreyas Iyer. He said that maybe NCA cleared him too quickly to make his comeback in international cricket. Iyer underwent surgery to treat his lower back injury.
